Sticky Note Word Wall

This is a project that we’ve had fun with in the past, and just recently revisited.  Emma really enjoys it!  Its great because it can last for awhile (many, many months for us) if you want, but is also super easy to take down, too, starting over when the interest or novelty returns.

All you need is some of these Post-it Word Strips (worth finding as they are much stickier than the usual post-its) and a bare patch of wall or door. And some markers.  For the most part,  Emma helps me decide what words to write and illustrates some of them, I do the actual handwriting.  She was really excited about the words and loves putting them up on the wall.  You can just stick them up randomly, group or color code them somehow, or make sentences, magnetic poetry style.  Getting them in the right order to spell sentences is a fun challenge for her right now!

I still need to bust out some "magic word wands" I have somewhere (those hard acrylic wands with liquid and glitter inside) to use to point to the words as you read them (helping with one-to-one correspondence).

All in all a lot of fun for us, and a low pressure way to get a little literacy practice in, too!

  • I’m amazed at the difference between Emma and my son, K. She’s only 6 months older than him and yet so interested and willing to learn words and letters (apparently). I’ve been trying to introduce letters and such to K but he rebels so strongly that I decided to pull back for a bit. I’d rather not turn him off learning entirely. This is a good idea for the future though…maybe in another 6 months.
