Notes from a Mellow Weekend

Its been a mellow weekend!  Spent mostly hanging around the house, folding laundry, cooking and preserving (kale chips and apple butter, yesterday, yum yum!), and a fair bit of lounging around.   The kids were sick on Friday, and still a bit under the weather, though improving rapidly.

Today we headed out for a family visit to the downtown REI.  Lonnie needed shoes and had a return to make, I desperately needed a new raincoat (see adventure from last weekend) and the lure of their big climbing treehouse play space and smoothies from World Wraps was an easy sell for us all.  It was kind of a zoo in the play area — obviously many other Seattlites had the same plan.  The kids loved it, though, so we will be headed back for more fun on a weekday when things are (hopefully) a bit mellower.  Definitely a great free indoor option when we need to get out of the house, though!  And if its just me and the kids, there will be no dangerous roaming through the clothing and shoe sections, ha ha!

Next up,  I am headed outside to attempt to disassemble our little "woodland climber" so I can bring it inside, down in the basement.  I am already feeling the winter crazies with two toddlers who need more exercise than they get when cooped up indoors, and think this will add some more physical play options indoors.  I am not at all opposed to doing things outside even in inclement weather (now, with new raincoat, I will be even more enthusiastic, ha ha) but there are certainly times when getting everyone decked out in appropriate attire, and then in again and changed, is more than I feel like tackling.  I think they will love being able to slide and climb downstairs, and will have fun hiding out underneath in the bottom little fort part, as well.  This climber has been such a great purchase for us — we’ve gotten so much use out of it over the past 3 years!  Here is a trip down memory lane….

While I am outside, I will probably feel guilted into picking up apples.  So many apples.  So little time.  My poor knife skills are the limiting factor on how much apple preserving I make these days, I’ve decided.  Peeling and coring is such a chore!

  • It’s so funny to read this post. I feel like I live on the opposite side of the earth when I read stuff about your weather.

Today in Houston was the first day since last spring that I felt we could actually spend real time outside. We got our first cool front of the fall, and our high was only 81. So nice! It will warm back up to the upper 80′s later this week, but even that’s better than the high 90′s with massive humidity.

I totally get the antsyness about being cooped up inside. That’s how we feel here during the summer. It’s so hard when the kiddos can’t go outside and play. Fall and “winter” are our times to actual exist outside.
